Crisis intervention is a time-limited intervention with a specific psychotherapeutic approach to immediately stabilize those in crisis.

Here are some key points about crisis intervention:

  1. Purpose: Crisis intervention addresses immediate mental health emergencies, stabilizes the person in crisis, and creates a safe plan for future treatment.
  2. Causes of Crisis: Various factors, such as highly stressful or traumatic events, acute increases in symptoms related to mental health diagnoses, or suicidal ideation, can lead to a crisis.
  3. How It Works: Effective crisis intervention involves connecting with the person in crisis, ensuring their safety, and helping them articulate the problem. A six-step model often guides responders:
    • Define the Problem: Establish a connection, actively listen, and empathize.
    • Ensure Client Safety: Ensure physical safety and assess risk.
    • Provide Support: Determine appropriate options for immediate and long-term support.
